Tasmanian Whisky Gains Momentum
Exhibitor: LAWRENNY ESTATE DISTILLERY
Date: 2025-09-30
Booth No.: Q1003
The global whisky landscape is shifting. While Scotch whisky has long dominated, its export figures has softened. The Scotch Whisky Association links these changes to premiumisation: consumers are drinking less by volume but are trading up to more distinctive single malts, blends and cask finishes. This shift has opened space for new world producers, particularly Tasmania.
The Tasmanian Rise
Tasmania, at the southern edge of Australia, is building a reputation as one of the most exciting whisky regions outside Scotland. It’s cool climate, clean air and pure waters create conditions well suited to whisky making. From the paddock to the barrel, Tasmanian distilleries are producing whiskies of character and provenance that are gaining traction with drinkers worldwide.
Exports reflect this momentum with a 227% increase in export values on the previous year, particularly across the Asian region.
Key export markets now include:
- China (73.2%)
- France (12.1%)
- Singapore (5.7%)
- Hong Kong (4.8%)
- Taiwan (2.8%)
- New Zealand (1.4%)
For Taiwan, this share is small but significant, showing early interest in Tasmanian single malt that is likely to grow as awareness builds.
Brands Leading the Way
The rise of Tasmanian whisky is driven by a handful of pioneering distilleries:
- Lark: the first to establish Tasmania’s whisky credentials, setting benchmarks for innovation and quality.
- Sullivans Cove: whose French Oak Cask won World’s Best Single Malt Whisky in 2014, giving international recognition to Tasmanian craft.
- Hellyers Road: based in Burnie, known for consistent releases and a wide export footprint across more than 20 countries.
- Lawrenny Estate Distillery: located in the Central Highlands, one of only a few true “paddock to bottle” distilleries worldwide. Lawrenny grows its own barley, draws water from the Upper River Derwent and matures casks in the island’s pristine climate.
For Taiwanese whisky drinkers, the story of Tasmanian whisky offers something distinct. Where Scotch represents tradition, Tasmanian whiskies carry a sense of discovery — spirits shaped by their land, water and people. They are premium, small-scale and traceable from paddock to bottle.
Taiwan already stands as one of the world’s most passionate whisky markets. The addition of Tasmanian single malt offers an opportunity to experience a new style of craftsmanship, one that is understated, pure and quietly confident — qualities at the heart of Tasmanian identity.
While Scotch whisky recalibrates, Tasmanian distilleries are stepping forward with confidence. Export numbers confirm the trajectory, with strong growth across Asia and Europe and growing recognition in markets like Taiwan.
For consumers seeking authenticity and provenance, Tasmanian whisky represents more than just a drink — it is a taste of place, a product of land, water and climate, and a quiet expression of quality.
