Characteristic
THIRON Single Malt Whisky is the first release in Lindores Abbey’s Renaissance Series, created to celebrate the 833-year historical connection with the Tiron-Gardais Abbey in the Perche region, southwest of Paris. The medieval Tiron-Gardais Abbey (founded in 1109) is the motherhouse of all Tironensian abbeys, including Lindores and Kelso. Friar John Cor of Lindores was a Tironensian monk tasked in 1494 with distilling aqua vitae for the king.

THIRON whisky is matured in red wine casks, bourbon casks, and French virgin oak casks sourced from oak trees grown in the Tiron-Gardais region. We place great importance on sustainability: to reduce our carbon footprint, we plant oak trees around Tiron-Gardais, regenerating the raw material rather than harvesting from natural forests.

With an alcohol content of 49.4% and non-chill filtered, THIRON initially offers rich notes of vanilla, caramel, and baked spices, gradually giving way to flavors of ginger and roasted chestnuts. Its silky, smooth texture epitomizes the signature Lindores Abbey character.

The bottle design pays tribute to the beautiful Roman columns and architecture of both abbeys, and the cork is engraved with the inscription, “May our roots always intertwine”. The same message is also featured on a French plaque gifted by the Mackenzie-Smith family to the village during their visit to Tiron.
